Media Release – Wednesday 13 February

The Waitemata Local Board has approved the continuation of Movies in Parks, despite the programme being axed by the Mayor and Councillors in this year’s council budget.

Through a coordinated approach, and funding from four local boards, they are in the final stages of resurrecting a reduced programme of events across Auckland next month. The proposal includes eight movies across the Waitemata, Henderson/Massey, Devenport/Takapuna and Waitakere local board areas.

Events portfolio holder for Waitemata Rob Thomas says that during transition to the Auckland Super City that the funding should have never been allocated as a regional based programme because it has always been a local event, similar to Music in Parks.

“These events generate a real sense of community and attract hundreds of people to local parks.” Mr Thomas said that through a tendering process local boards have been able to reduce the overall cost of the programme compared to previous years; creating better value for ratepayers.

“Despite what Wellington might claim, the community of Grey Lynn is the heart of the New Zealand film and television industry. Movies in Parks is a celebration of the film industry and encourages participation in local parks.”
